Dataphyte Foundation, a policy research, data analytics, and civic technology organisation providing access to data, insights, and civic technology for Nigeria's socio-economic development, is launching a new project to assess the security situation in Nigeria.
This project, titled “Security Research and Media Monitoring Project,” became imperative in light of the recent violent attacks in Benue State, which have claimed over 400 lives, as well as the growing insecurity in other parts of the country.
Nigeria’s security landscape continues to be marked by terrorism, communal violence, and farmer-herder conflicts. Extremist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State's West Africa Province (ISWAP) have entrenched their presence in the North-East, unleashing waves of violence that have destabilised the region and displaced many. The farmer-herder conflict has also emerged as a major security concern, alongside ethnic and religious violence that has heightened tensions among communities.
By analysing data on conflict trends, government responses, and security-related budget allocations, Dataphyte aims to generate clear, accessible, and impactful insights that will inform public discourse and shape effective policy reforms in the security sector.
The research will spotlight insecurity hotspots across high-risk states, examine the implications of political transitions on security dynamics, and explore the role of media narratives in shaping public awareness and citizen responses to insecurity.
This project aligns with Dataphyte’s mission to bridge the data access gap for development by providing tools, insights, and evidence that empower citizens, policymakers, and civic actors to make informed, impactful decisions.
