Dataphyte Foundation announces the release date for Gender Disparities: Democratic Realities and Governance Outcomes in Nigeria, a comprehensive work that spotlights the persistent gaps in women’s representation across government and corporate governance spaces in the country. The publication is set for official release on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, marking a significant contribution to conversations around an increase in women’s representation in the next election cycle.
The publication deploys data analysis, case studies, and archival evidence to examine how the limited inclusion of women in leadership continues to shape Nigeria’s development trajectory. It argues that increasing women’s participation in the next electoral cycle is both urgent and necessary to strengthen democratic outcomes. The publication is an effort to change the narrative and advocate for more women in governance structures nationwide.
The research work reinforces a growing body of evidence that women in governance contribute significantly to developmental policymaking and more equitable decision-making. While Nigeria continues to struggle with gender imbalance in leadership, the report presents fresh data filling the knowledge gap on representation levels across political and corporate systems.
Key areas explored include drivers of gender inequality in governance, why increased women representation matters, how representation shapes governance outcomes, and human stories behind exclusion and systemic barriers
Among the most striking data points is Nigeria’s poor international ranking in female cabinet representation and the steady decline in the percentage of women within legislative seats, signalling an urgent need for structural and policy reforms.
With development slowing and governance challenges deepening, the publication argues that Nigeria cannot continue to sideline half of its population in decision-making spaces. It reminds policymakers, researchers, civic actors and citizens that women’s voices are essential for stronger institutions and improved democratic realities.
The evidence presented aims to influence public discourse, shift policy perspectives, and guide future reforms, especially as the nation approaches the next election cycle.
Speaking on the forthcoming release, the author, Lucy Okonkwo, stated that the current happenings in the country highlight the reason why increased women representation in governance is now paramount.
“The recent incident of Senator Natasha at the National Assembly made me ask: if there were an equal number of women as men in the house, would the outcome have been different?”
The Country Director, Oluseyi Olufemi, commented, ”It’s sad that when we discuss minorities in representation and governance, we still have to include women. Yes, they are in the minority in the sociopolitical leadership context, but this is a contrived minority representation. Women are a natural, numerical, and ideal majority when they are not systemically and socially deprived of equal voice and human development opportunities, from the cradle to the pinnacle of their lives. Very sad.
